Waste
We are very lucky – our local Council’s recycling program means that about 70% of our waste is recycled in some way.
In reality our two street bins are both recycle bins. The green topped bin is for compostable material and its contents are made into high grade compost for gardens. The yellow topped bin is for recyclables and other “dry” material. This bin’s contents are sorted and mostly recycled, with the remainder sent to land fill.
We provide three three bins for our guests. The smallest bin is for food scraps and tea bags. We use this in our own compost and wormfarm.
The biggest bin is for recyclable materials – paper, card-board, glass, plastic (including bags and glad wrap). This bin is well sorted and we tell people if it is dry, put it in this bin.
The medium bin is for other compostable rubbish that we cannot deal with at home, like nappies or sanitary pads and tree prunings.
We encourage guests to check with us if they are not sure what goes where. We think along the lines of wet or used to be alive in the compostable green bin, and dry or was never alive in the recyclables yellow bin.
