What we’ve done
What we have done
Before opening The Painted Fish we spent a year retrofitting the buildings so they are more energy and water efficient. We are now working on Shimtani – the house we live in.
In both cases it seems we are part of an ongoing learn by trial and error experiment with things changing as we learn more, new products become available and new legislation comes on line.
Over this time the gardens around The Painted Fish have overflowed their boundaries as we make use of underutilized land and sunlight that would otherwise go to waste. One of the best things about gardening in public spaces is the way it connects you to the community around you
Each time we facilitate a Living Smart course our interest in sustainability broadens – from learning to preserve our garden produce, to cleaning our home and eating more sustainably, living a more simple lifestyle, and developing community.
Each year during the Hulbert Street Sustainability Fiesta, we prepare a series of information sheets that outline what we have been up to and this year we have reproduced them on line.
We hope you enjoy learning more about our journey on our website, or you can check out this you tube piece created before our 2010 Fiesta by some students at Curtin Univerity. Hulbert Street
