Come and learn
A comment we hear often when we talk about our lives on Hulbert Street is “any houses for sale? I want to come and live there!”
Fair enough, it’s a fantastic community to live in. Our annual Christmas Party and Earth Hour events are highlights of the year. Each afternoon the street is full of kids playing soccer or cricket, we all meet for afternoon tea each Wednesday and we even have a street choir!
If you want to get a feel for it there are lots of ways you can join in. With the help of our neighbours, we organise many events throughout the year.
All year we screen movies with a sustainable feel, outdoors at the end of the street in summer and in our local Council Reception Room in winter. These movies are generally held on a Friday night and we get between 50 and 150 people coming each time.
On the last Sunday of each month we have a Hulbert Street Tour through the Painted Fish, our home – Shimtani House, the street and guerilla gardens and we talk about Hulbert Street and what we have done here to generate community generally.
And once a year we close off the street to all traffic and celebrate Sustainable Living in style during the Hulbert Street Sustainability Fiesta. Held during the third weekend of September our street boasts open homes, gardens and art studios, a speakers tent, street stalls and entertainment, with lots of do and learn for the whole family.
Tim and Shani also coordinate the Freo Living Smarties. This group meets on the first Wednesday of each month for a catch up and skill sharing evening aimed to support those who have participated in the Living Smart and their friends.
Check out our pages on Hulbert Street Movie Program, Hulbert Street Tours, Hulbert Street Sustainability Fiesta, and Freo Living Smarties or the calendar of events on this website.
We hope to see you on our street or at an event soon!
